Rescue & Rehabilitation
Since 1986 it has been our privilege to
volunteer for the animal rescue and rehabilitation needs of our county.
Over the years we have been pleased to be of service to
the requests of both the the DNR and the Alcona County
Sheriffs Department for wild animal rehabilitation as well as
large and small domestic and farm animal rescue.
Our donated services on behalf of many wild animals included orphaned fawns.
Our rehab program worked extremely well
due to the fact that we raise Dairy Goats which proved very compatible for the needs of infant fawns whom we
would foster with one of our milking does. Fawns raised on goat milk always thrived vigorously and our does were very accommodating! The peaceful, safe and rural location of our farm allowed the fawns to roam freely and each
one was carefully raised and managed until successfully introduced
back into
the wild at maturity.
We were also excited to share this unique experience
with the many foreign exchange students and teachers we welcomed over the years as a host family.
Our guests were from many countries from all over the world including Japan, Newfoundland, India, China, Jamaica and Finland.
Most of them had never been so close to a white-tailed dear
as to actually touch one and they were awed to be able to
pet them here
and help with their management.
Unfortunately, radical governmental management of
suspected bovine TB concerns
put an end to our work with orphaned fawns in the early 90's.
The DNR no longer seeks rehab but
must destroy all reported orphaned fawns as required by law. However, we feel it was a rare and precious opportunity to have been able to
participate in such a wonderful work with the fawns and hope to one day be able to do so again.
Because
our county was without a Humane Society facility until
2001, Mari-May Kennels provided volunteer services free of
charge for a variety of animals including
abandoned cats, dogs, chickens, goats, horses, ponies and other animals for 15
years.
Fortunately, we now have a new
Humane Society staffed by a group of dedicated people
who serve Alcona
County in official capacity. But we still remain ever available to the
needs of our
county for both small and large animal rescue and are often called upon to this day.
Mari-May Pet Resort also donated the web design
and site hosting for the Alcona County Humane Societies very first web
page in 2000.
Please check back for more pictures of some of
our rescue and rehab guests.
