Canine Hydro-Exercise, Hydro Massage & Spa

Hydro Exercise -
Hydro-exercise is great for all dogs. Sessions are available for fun or for reconditioning. Dogs that benefit from hydro-exercise are
Y Overweight dogs
Y Senior dogs
Y Dogs that just love the water!
Dogs that have physical ailments can recover more quickly with hydro-massage sessions, however dogs also benefit from swimming without massage.

Fun Swims
Mari-May Pet Resort offers fun swims for dogs! Fun swims allow dogs to play in the pool and enjoy free style exercise with a variety of toys and doggie-games. A hydro-exercise trainer is in constant attendance.

Why is Hydro-exercise so Beneficial?
Hydro-exercise is beneficial because it a low impact, total body workout that encourages voluntary muscle movement in water while your dog is weightless. When your pet enters warm water and begins to swim, his/her limbs can achieve range of motion without impact. The gentle resistance of water also helps your dog rebuild atrophied muscle. Warm water (approximately 90 degrees), also relaxes your dog almost instantly, which also allows the muscles to move without stress.

While your pet is swimming, gentle massage is used to relieve pain and loosen tense muscles.

Hydro-exercise can also accelerate the healing process. Recovery rate or therapeutic value for dogs is individual so treatment should occur at a pace that is favorable to the natural ability of your pet and with the consultation of your Veterinarian.

Swimming is considered beneficial for:

  • Hip dysplasia
  • Arthritis
  • Pre & Post Surgery
  • Elbow dysplasia
  • Knee injuries
  • Range of motion problems
  • Weight reduction
  • Paralysis
  • Growth problems
  • Stroke
  • Increased circulation
  • Muscle degeneration

How Often Should My Dog Swim?
Dogs may be scheduled for a "Fun Swim" in the spa as often as you'd like - especially in winter months when the opportunity for exercise is often limited or inhibited by inclement weather!

For dogs with a medical condition or post-surgery, the initial recommended treatment for hydro-exercise is three days in a row. This three-day treatment is recommended for pets with severe arthritis and pets recovering from surgery. The three consecutive treatments give your dog an advantageous jump-start to healing that is more effective than if he/she just swims every other day or once a week.

Why is This Effective?
During the first session, muscle groups begin to be used that may have not been exercised in months or years. After the second session, your pet is relaxed and more familiar with the experience and this allows the exercise to be effective. By the third day, your dog begins to build muscle and increase range of motion.

After the first three days of treatment, your dog is re-evaluated and, if necessary, a maintenance exercise plan is scheduled.

Can I Sign My Dog up For Just A Fun Swim?
Of course! Swimming is beneficial for maintaining good health!

How Does My Dog Get Into the Water?
Each dog is carefully fitted with a high quality life-jacket before being escorted into the water by an experienced handler. Depending on the size of your dog, a comfortable lift may be used to increase safety. The attendant stays in the water the entire session with your dog and works with individual consideration to each pet.

How Long Are the Sessions?
Sessions are evaluated individually and depend on the physical fitness level of your pet. A typical session consists of swimming your dog until he/she is tired - typically 15 to 25 minutes.

What Should I Expect from My Dog after Swimming?
Your dog will probably be very tired after the first session. In cases of post surgery, the injury may seem a little worse when you return home. This is not uncommon and considered normal. After the second session you will be able to see a difference in your dog and in many cases will see a marked improvement.

How Much Does it Cost?
Sessions run $25 per 1/2 hour.
